The Work of the Governing Body

Alexander First School successfully maintains a supportive and caring atmosphere where staff and governors work together to ensure that all our pupils have the opportunity to develop to their full potential. The role of the governing body is to ensure that the school provides a range of academic and social opportunities that enables pupils to be well taught and make good progress with their learning.

The governing body of the school is responsible for overseeing the strategic decisions of the school. It is involved in making decisions about staffing, the curriculum, school buildings and finance. The head teacher is responsible for the day to day running of the school and governors work in close partnership with and support the head teacher and her staff. The governors’ job is to monitor and question to ensure that the school functions well.

Governors ratify, monitor and review a range of policies that govern the operation of the school, including Health and Safety, Safeguarding, Behaviour, Curriculum and Performance Management. Individual governors have responsibility for specific areas of school life, such as English, Mathematics, Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND), Safeguarding etc.

The work of governance at Alexander First School is carried out by the Full Governing Body (FGB), which meets 3 times a year and the Finance Committee, which also meets 3 times a year. Individual governors monitor their specific areas of responsibility and report to FGB.

Joining in

Governors to a school’s Governing Body are either elected or appointed. If you would like to be part of Alexander First School’s Governing Body please enquire initially at the school office about any vacancies and speak to the Head teacher or Chair of Governors.

Visit RBWM Website http://www.rbwm.gov.uk/web/ed_gov_faqs_gov_index_25322.htm for information about the role of school governors and how to become a school governor.
